I am so thankful to the many volunteers who've helped me since February; and to the thousands of residents who've shared their ideas, words of encouragement and cookies as we walked the neighborhoods. We met many nice people at the Friday Farmer's Markets, the Pride parade, East Village Arts District events Saturday nights, and other events throughout the district. Your support has kept me energized despite sore feet and sunburns. Although the election is over, we will continue to work to make our city become economically and environmentally sustainable. A clean and healthy environment is critical to the future of our City. Good environmental policy is good economic policy, because a clean city maintains productivity, increases tourism, and benefits from investments in green technology. We can plan our city as it grows, using "smart growth" to reclaim areas, improve neighborhood cohesion, increase available parking, walkability, and affordability while attracting employers and maintaining a high standard of living for residents. Let's also support our locally owned businesses with our Redevelopment Agency (RDA) money, instead of big-box out-of-state retail who take their profits out of California. Other cities have brought technology jobs, medical research, "green collar" environmentally beneficial jobs or other employers who help our local economy. As we have dropped from 37th poorest city in the US to 6th, we need to re-evaluate how we spend our public funds. We need to invest in our people and our future to make Long Beach's local economy strong enough to pay for our basic needs - police and fire, restored library hours, after-school programs, graffiti removal, sidewalk and pothole repairs. Long Beach would benefit from more opportunities to bring everyone to the table to find solutions as we grow. Gabrielle Weeks |
